Be Here Now – Book Review

I will say that this book is…interesting.

I never had a book make me feel this way. I suppose I didn’t know what I was getting into.

“Be Here Now” by Ram Dass is a trip – literally. Reading the author’s background, it seemed like he did all the drugs. I had read this in reviews, but figured that I was open to concepts that were more “out there.”

This book is really, really out there.

This all being said, I found it difficult to finish. To be honest, I’m not really sure if there’s a start or finish to the book, as it is a collection of insights, quotes, and drawings depicting how the Universe works.

I enjoyed what it had to offer – and the pictures did a great job of depicting the sensations that come with connecting to the Universe (albeit in a much more trippy, 70’s-esque art style). Perhaps my modern, easily distracted brain would have preferred sleeker lines and gradient colors. Parts of me wanted to whip out colored pencils to add more life to the pages. Parts of me wanted to rip pages out so I could keep them at my desk.

I almost wish there was a remake of this book in modern style, with colors – or even a coloring book version. I feel as if so much of the meaning behind the depictions comes from the process of creating it – and consuming it felt shallow in comparison.

I think I am going to hang onto it for now, and possibly revisit its pages another time. It certainly seems that I can grasp more, or maybe grasp things differently, if I take another look with a different mindset.

Have you read “Be Here Now?” What were your thoughts/takeaways? What books do you recommend or would like to see here? Let me know!
